Hello and welcome to 4th grade!

 

My name is Mrs. Shreiner, and I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year. I am so excited to start my fifth year of teaching and my second year here at St. Joseph Catholic School. 

 

Being a teacher was something I always felt I was called to do. I received my undergraduate degree from St. Norbert College and recently received a Master’s degree in Elementary Education. When I’m not in the classroom, you can find me reading a good book, exploring the outdoors, or spending time with my family and dog.

 

I believe in creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential. This year, students will expand their reading and math skills, explore their relationship with God and others, and work together to serve the community. I am excited to teach Social Studies again this year, where we will take a tour of the United States, learning about its history, people, and geography. 

 

I’m so lucky to have the support of two wonderful teacher's aides, Mrs. Broken and Mrs. Graham. Their expertise and commitment are truly invaluable, and I couldn’t be more excited to have them as part of our classroom team. Together, we’re ready to make this year a remarkable one for our students!

Week at a Glance: November 18 - November 22

Reminders: 
- Trimester 2 begins Monday

Math: We will begin this week by reviewing all of chapter 6. The students will spend time practicing division and preparing for the Chapter 6 math test on Thursday. We will also review multiplication, place value, addition and subtraction from the beginning of the year. 
Objectives:
- Solve division problems. 
- Students will engage in group activities and review exercises to reinforce key concepts from Chapter 6, ensuring readiness for the upcoming test
- Students will practice and recall multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 to build fluency and confidence.
 
Social Studies: The students will begin their Southeast Landmark or National Park Research Project this week. The children will work in small groups to research a landmark or national park in the Southeast region. Once their research is complete, they will create a poster that they will present to the class. 
Objectives:
- Students will identify and gather information about a selected landmark or national park in the Southeast region using books, websites, and other resources.
-  Students will organize their research findings into clear and logical sections for their Google Slides presentation.
- Students will analyze the significance of their chosen landmark or national park and explain its importance to the Southeast region and its visitors.
 
Religion: During the month of November, we will step away from the book and focus on thankfulness. This week, the students will connect the Bible to Thanksgiving by creating a bible acrostic poem.
Objective:
- Students will create an acrostic poem that reflects themes of thankfulness, using words and phrases from the Bible to express their gratitude.
 
LA/Reading: We are continuing in Unit 2 this week, focusing on Week 5. This week’s story is The Weird and Wonderful Echidna by Mike Jung. The students will take a reading comprehension and vocabulary test on Friday. We will finish our travel articles by making the right changes to our draft and writing the final article. 
Week 5 Focus Question: How do adaptations make animals unique? 
Vocabulary Words: unique, monotremes, adaptations, burrow
Objectives:
- Synthesize information to create new understanding. 
- Explain how text structure contributes to the author’s purpose. 
- Edit drafts using standard English conventions. 
- Publish written work for appropriate audiences. 
 
Spelling: The spelling words for this week focus on words with Latin roots. The words will be given on Monday and the test will be on Friday. To prepare, students will have daily spelling homework alternating between word choice activities and a worksheet from their book.
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge.
- Determine the meaning of words with affixes and roots.

Week at a Glance: November 11 - November 15

We spent some time this afternoon playing a gratitude game and making blessing bracelets with our buddies. I posted pictures in the album on my webpage.
 
Reminders: 
- Food Pantry Collection on Wednesday, November 13. Fourth Grade students have been asked to donate pasta. 
 
Math: We will begin this week by reviewing the lessons that we covered last week and taking a quiz on those lessons. The second half of the week we will cover lessons seven, nine and ten. During these lessons, the students will learn to place the first digit, divide greater numbers, and learn about dividing quotients with zeros. 
Objectives:
- Determine where to place the first digit when dividing. 
- Solve division problems with greater numbers. 
- Solve division problems that result in quotients that have zeros. 
 
Social Studies: We will begin our exploration of the Southeast this week. This week the students will read about nine different places in the Southeast, including Jamestown, Memphis, and Montgomery. This introduction to the Southeast will help the students prepare for their next social studies project which we will be introduced this week and started in class next week. 
Focus Question: What factors have shaped the culture of the Southeast?
Objectives:
- Apply map skills to locate important places in the Southwest. 
- Describe the major physical and human features of the Southeast.
 
Religion: During the month of November, we will step away from the book and focus on thankfulness. This week, the students will make Thanksgiving turkeys focusing on what they can thank God for and what they want to ask of God during this holiday season. 
Objectives:
- Students will list at least three things they are grateful for in their lives.
- Students will write three things they would like to ask God for during the holiday season.
 
LA/Reading: We are continuing in Unit 2 this week, focusing on Week 4. This week’s story is an excerpt from, Butterfly Eyes by Joyce Sidman. The students will take a reading comprehension and vocabulary test on Friday. We will also continue working on our travel articles by editing our rough drafts by meeting with a teacher to read it over and correct any mistakes. 
Week 4 Focus Question: In what ways do living things depend on each other? 
Vocabulary Words: tender, steeped, excreted, vessels, ultraviolet
Objectives:
- Students will learn more about poetry and read a text that helps them analyze structure, rhythm, rhyme, and meter. 
- Students will develop knowledge about language to make connections between reading poetry and writing poetry. 
- Students will use elements of informational text to write a travel article. 
 
Spelling: The spelling words for this week focus on words with Greek roots. The words will be given on Monday and the test will be on Friday. To prepare, students will have daily spelling homework alternating between word choice activities and a worksheet from their book.
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge.
- Determine the meaning of words with affixes and roots.

Week at a Glance: November 4 - November 7

Math: This week we will begin Chapter 6 Divide by a One-Digit Number. This week we will begin to learn how to multiply by 10, 100, and 1,000, estimate quotients, divide with and interpret remainders. 
Objectives:
- Use basic facts and patterns to divide mentally. 
- Estimate quotients using compatible numbers, basic facts, and place value. 
- Divide with remainders and check using multiplication and addition. 
- Interpret what the remainder means in the context of a division problem. 
 
Social Studies: We will finish our Northeast Unit this week. The students will compete in a game show to show what they know. We will finish by making a Northeast comic strip comparing life in our towns to life in the Northeast. 
Focus Question: How do people live in the Northeast? 
Objectives:
- Simulate the population density of the Northeast and compare it with that of other regions in the United States.
- Synthesize information from the reading into creative writing. 

Religion: During the month of November, we will step away from the book and focus on thankfulness. This week, the students will reflect and write thank-you letters to God, thanking Him for all the blessings we have received.
Objectives:
- Students will reflect on the blessings in their lives and identify at least three things they are thankful for.
- Students will write a thank-you letter to God, using proper letter format and complete sentences.
- Students will express their feelings of gratitude clearly in their letters, explaining why they are thankful for each blessing.
 
LA/Reading: We are continuing in Unit 2 this week, focusing on Week 3. This week’s story is an excerpt from, Minn of the Mississippi by Holling Clancy Holling. The students will take a reading comprehension and vocabulary test on Thursday. 
This week the students will also continue creating their own travel article. This week we will begin our rough drafts for our travel article. 
Week 2 Focus Question: What challenges do animals face in their environments?
Vocabulary Words: rapids, shimmering, desire, shallow, deserted
Objectives:
- Analyze plot elements.
- Explain the influence of the setting, including historical setting, on the plot. 
- Compose informational texts, including brief compositions that convey information about a topic using a clear central idea and genre characteristics and craft.
- Develop drafts into a focused, structured, and coherent piece of writing by developing an engaging idea with relevant details. 
 
Spelling: The spelling words for this week focus on words with irregular plurals. The words will be given on Monday and the test will be on Thursday. To prepare, students will have daily spelling homework alternating between word choice activities and a worksheet from their book.
Objective:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by decoding words with specific orthographic patterns and rules, including regular and irregular plurals.
