Week at a Glance 5/20/24-5/24/24
Week at a Glance
Week of May 20-24, 2024
Math: We will finish up our short unit on measurement. Students will be able to draw and label line segments of specific lengths. They will also solve word problems involving different measurements. Finally, students will complete a project that combines math and art where they will design a house (and other objects like trees) according to certain measurement specifications. This project will serve in place of a traditional test.
Phonics (Fundations): We started learning about words with syllables that contain au and aw. We will continue working through this short unit in the early part of next week. We will also work on trick words: August, laugh, daughter. Students will take a test on Wednesday, 5/22, and then we will start our final unit, which focuses on consonant-le words (e.g., table, pickle, etc.). New trick words will include: young, trouble, couple.
Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): Unfortunately, we will not be able to complete the entire Module 3 from our reading curriculum, but we will continue to learn about the Civil Rights Movement next week. The students are really intrigued by this topic, and some of them even remember parts of MLK Jr.’s speech. We will compare different and discuss illustrations from our I Have a Dream text, and we will also conduct a close reading to figure out the meaning of unknown words. During our writing portion of the lessons, we will review the meaning of “adjectives” and “adverbs”, how to use them in sentences, and examples of each part of speech.
Science: As we work through our unit on Physical Properties, we will discuss the question: What materials might be invented in the future? We will also explain how new materials are invented, learn about “bouncy glass”, and plan an invention that we would like to create with this material.
Social Studies: None - see Science
Religion: As we near the end of the school year, we will spend some time learning about Marian apparitions and the feast of Pentecost (also called “the birthday of the church” - fun fact!). We will continue to review the responses from the Mass, and we will attend Mass with the entire school community on Tuesday.
